Caring for your New Orchid
Thank you for adding our orchids to your collection. These orchids are currently in a delicate growth phase and require specific care to ensure their successful transition to continue to mature. Please follow the guidelines below to cultivate your orchids effectively:
-
Avoid re-potting immediately: Upon receiving your orchids, it is essential not to re-pot them right away. These plants need time to acclimate to their new environment and recover from any shipping stress. Refrain from repotting for at least two to six months to allow the orchids to settle in.
-
Retain orchid wood stakes: Some orchids in this growth stage might still have wood stakes for support. These stakes play a crucial role in stabilizing the plants and aiding their root growth. Only remove the stakes once the orchids have developed strong roots or when they become a hindrance to growth.
-
Allow acclimation: Orchids in the intermediate stage are more sensitive to environmental changes compared to mature orchids. Place them in a suitable location with indirect sunlight initially to help them adapt smoothly. Avoid direct sunlight at first, as it may stress the young plants.
-
Water promptly: Water the orchids upon arrival, ensuring a gentle and thorough watering to moisturize the root system. Use room temperature water and avoid overwatering. However, orchids in this stage often require more water (2 - 3x per week) and humidity than mature ones.
-
Increased water and humidity needs: Orchids in this stage have higher water and humidity requirements compared to fully matured orchids. Monitor moisture levels in the growing medium, ensuring it remains consistently moist but not waterlogged. Utilize a humidity tray to maintain an appropriate level of humidity around the plants.
-
Watch for signs of stress: Regularly inspect the orchids for signs of stress, disease, or dehydration. Take prompt action if any issues arise. Proper care during this stage is vital for the development of the orchids toward maturing.
-
Start fertilizing: Begin applying a balanced orchid fertilizer at half the recommended strength. Fertilize the orchids once every two weeks or once a month during their active growing season. Adjust the frequency based on the specific fertilizer and the growth rate of your orchids.
-
Apply pest control measures: Implement preventive pest control measures after two weeks, at least once a month. Regularly inspect the orchids for signs of pests or diseases.
