Cattlianthe Portia ‘Cannizzaro’
(Guarianthe bowringiana × Cattleya labiata)

Cattlianthe Portia is a classic and elegant primary hybrid that combines the best traits of Guarianthe bowringiana x Cattleya labiata. Known for its striking clusters of blooms, this orchid produces flowers in shades of soft to deep pink lavender, often accented with a vibrant magenta lip and a delicate fragrance. The blooms are long-lasting and typically appear in the fall, although with proper care, they can surprise growers with multiple blooming seasons.

This hybrid inherits the vigorous growth habit and floriferous nature of Guarianthe bowringiana, while showcasing the large, showy flowers and sweet scent of Cattleya labiata. Cattlianthe Portia is an excellent choice for both beginner and seasoned orchid enthusiasts, as it is relatively easy to grow and adapts well to a range of conditions.

Cultivation Tips

Light:
Provide bright, indirect light (2,000–3,000 foot-candles). Morning or late afternoon sun is ideal. If growing indoors, place it near an east- or south-facing window with sheer curtains to filter direct rays.

Temperature:
Thrives in intermediate to warm conditions. Daytime temperatures of 70–85°F (21–29°C) and nighttime temperatures of 55–65°F (13–18°C) are ideal. A slight drop in nighttime temperature can encourage blooming.

Humidity:
Maintain 50–70% humidity. Use a humidity tray or room humidifier if grown indoors, especially during dry seasons.

Watering:
Water thoroughly when the medium is nearly dry but never let the plant sit in water. Reduce watering slightly after blooms fade to allow for a rest period, but do not let the pseudobulbs shrivel.

Fertilizer:
Feed with a balanced orchid fertilizer (20-20-20) at ¼ to ½ strength every 2 weeks during active growth. Switch to a bloom-boosting formula (high in phosphorus) as flower spikes begin to develop.

Potting Medium:
Use a well-draining medium such as a mix of medium-grade bark, perlite, and charcoal. Repot every 2–3 years or when the medium starts to break down, ideally right after flowering.

Air Circulation:
Ensure good airflow around the plant to prevent fungal and bacterial issues, especially in high humidity conditions.
