Arachnis labrosa, a medium-sized member of the vandaceous genus, is a rare and exquisite orchid species native to the Himalayas, India, Bhutan, Sikkim, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, China, and Taiwan. This epiphytic orchid is known for its fragrant and strikingly patterned flowers that make it a prized addition to any orchid collection.

Description:

  • Size and Growth Habit: This orchid features woody, pendulous stems that can reach 2 to 3 feet in length. Its coriaceous, keeled leaves are unequally bilobed and measure between 10 to 15 cm long.
  • Flowers: The Arachnis labrosa produces fragrant, 1-2 inch flowers on a drooping wiry stem that can grow up to 8-12 inches and occasionally branches out. Each raceme, as long as the leaves, can bear up to 10 flowers spaced 2 to 3 cm apart. The sepals are oblong to oblanceolate and blunt, with petals that are slightly smaller, oblong, and acute. The lip is shorter than the petals with a distinctive blunt apex and large papilla.
  • Coloration: The sepals and petals are a vibrant yellow adorned with dark brown markings. The lip is also yellow, featuring dark pink lines and auricles highlighted with bright pink blotches.

Cultivation Tips:

  • Light: Arachnis labrosa thrives in bright indirect light. Ensure it receives ample light, but protect it from direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
  • Temperature: This orchid prefers intermediate to warm temperatures, ideally between 60-85+ degrees Fahrenheit. Maintaining a stable temperature range will support healthy growth and flowering.
  • Watering and Fertilization: Regular watering is crucial as Arachnis labrosa does not have a rest period. Keep the potting mix slightly moist but not waterlogged. Consistent fertilization throughout the year will provide the necessary nutrients for optimal growth and blooming.
  • Potting Medium: Use a well-drained potting mix to prevent root rot and ensure good air circulation around the roots. A mix suitable for epiphytic orchids, such as bark or coconut husk chips, works well.
  • Humidity: This species appreciates high humidity levels, ideally around 50-70%. Regular misting and the use of a humidity tray can help maintain the desired humidity.
  • Blooming: With proper care, Arachnis labrosa blooms during the Summer-Fall period when mature. Its captivating flowers not only add visual appeal but also fill the air with a delightful fragrance.

This is a blooming size plant in a 5โ€ pot, about 1 to 2 years to bloom. Grown from Seed Limited!

Arachnis labrosa is an orchid that demands consistent care but rewards growers with its unique and fragrant flowers. By providing bright indirect light, intermediate-warm temperatures, regular watering, and a well-drained potting mix, you can enjoy the stunning blooms of this rare vandaceous species hanging gracefully beside your window.
