Eria amica is a charming epiphytic orchid treasured for its delightful springtime display and intoxicating fragrance. Native to a vast region across the Western Himalayas, Northeast India, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, Southeast Asia, southern China, Taiwan, and Vietnam, this species thrives in both lowland evergreen forests and highland cloud forests at elevations ranging from 600 to 2200 meters.

This small-sized orchid forms clusters of somewhat cylindrical to ovoid pseudobulbs, each bearing 1 to 3 narrow, linear-lanceolate leaves that taper gracefully into a grooved, petiolate base. In spring, Eria amica produces 1 to 3 erect, axillary inflorescences, each 3 to 4 inches (7.5 to 10 cm) long and loosely carrying 5 to 12 fragrant flowers. These blooms are not only elegant but also reward growers with a lovely, subtle perfume.

🌿 Cultivation Tips for Eria amica:

  • Temperature: Warm to cool-growing. Ideal daytime temperatures range from 65–80°F (18–27°C), with nighttime lows between 50–60°F (10–15°C).

  • Light: Medium to bright filtered light (similar to Cattleya or Dendrobium conditions). Avoid direct midday sun.

  • Humidity: Prefers high humidity levels (60–80%), especially in active growth. A humidity tray or greenhouse conditions are beneficial.

  • Watering: During active growth, keep the medium evenly moist, but never soggy. Allow a slight drying between waterings during winter rest.

  • Potting Medium: A well-draining mix of fine bark, perlite, and sphagnum moss works well. Mounting on cork or tree fern slabs is ideal for mimicking its natural epiphytic habitat, especially in high-humidity environments.

  • Air Circulation: Ensure good air movement to prevent fungal issues and to replicate its native breezy habitats.

  • Feeding: Use a balanced orchid fertilizer (1/4 strength) every two weeks during the growing season. Reduce feeding during winter dormancy.

This is a blooming size orchid division recently imported and potted in a 3” pot, about 1 to 2 years to bloom; grown from seed. Limited!

Eria amica is an excellent choice for orchid collectors looking to explore species from misty, biodiverse forests. Its compact growth, fragrant blooms, and ecological versatility make it a rewarding addition to any well-maintained orchidarium or intermediate collection.
