Grammatophyllum speciosum, also known as the Tiger Orchid or Giant Orchid, is a large to giant-sized epiphyte and occasional lithophyte, recognized as the heaviest orchid in the world. Native to lowland forests near streams and rivers in Southeast Asia, it thrives at elevations of 100 to 1200 meters in Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia, Borneo, Java, Moluccas, the Philippines, Sulawesi, Sumatra, Bismarck Islands, Papua New Guinea, and the Solomon Islands.

This orchid features erect to spreading, very long, cylindrical pseudobulbs that age to a yellowish hue and are enveloped by both leafless and leaf-bearing sheaths. Its thin, textured, distichous leaves are linear or ovate, either obtuse or acute, and decurved in the apical half. Blooming seasons are fall, early winter, and summer, producing 4 to 10-foot long, basal, erect to arching racemose inflorescences that carry 30 to 50 waxy, long-lasting, and sometimes fragrant flowers, with the lowest flowers being imperfect and distant.

The pseudobulbs can grow up to 3 meters long, giving the plant a palm tree-like appearance. Blooming can be sporadic and slow, often requiring large plants with numerous backbulbs. Grammatophyllum speciosum may benefit from the presence of ants, which are often found in conjunction with this species

Cultivating Tips

Watering:
Grammatophyllum speciosum thrives with frequent watering. The frequency depends on the container, temperature, air circulation, and the water retention capacity of the medium. Ensure the roots approach dryness before rewatering to maintain optimal health.

Light:
Once the orchid is well-established, gradually acclimate it to sunlight by reducing sun cover over time. This practice helps the plant become accustomed to natural light conditions.

Temperature:
The ideal temperature range for Grammatophyllum speciosum is between 15 to 25°C (59 to 77°F). Temperatures outside this range can negatively impact the growth and development of the plant.

Fertilizer:
Apply fertilizer during the growing period to support robust development. Use a balanced orchid fertilizer and follow recommended guidelines for application rates.
