Introducing the Hoya polyneura, affectionately known as the Fish Tail Hoya, a mesmerizing epiphytic plant that combines delicate light green leaves with dark green fishbone veins, creating a stunning pendant display. Not only is it a feast for the eyes with its unique foliage, but this Hoya species also boasts spectacular star-shaped creamy yellow and red blooms that emit a robust and pleasant aroma, reminiscent of wax. The name "Fish Tail Hoya" is aptly earned due to the distinctive pattern of dark green veins on its light green leaves, resembling the tail of a mermaid.
Originating from regions including Assam, China South-Central, East Himalaya, Laos, Myanmar, and Tibet, this fast-growing beauty has captured the hearts of plant collectors worldwide. Its pendant, epiphytic growth habit makes it an excellent choice as a hanging plant, allowing the exquisite flowers to gracefully hang below the leaves.
Cultivating the Hoya polyneura is a delightful experience, and here are some tips to ensure your plant thrives:
Light: Provide bright, indirect light, but avoid direct sunlight to prevent leaf discoloration. A shaded environment is ideal, ensuring the unique leaf patterns remain vibrant.
Watering: Water when the top inch of soil is dry. Adjust your watering frequency based on the season, keeping in mind that moderation is key. In the summer, a weekly watering schedule is suitable, while in winter, watering every two weeks is recommended. When in doubt, it's better to under-water than over-water.
Fertilizing: Feed your Hoya polyneura regularly with a flowering orchid tucker in early spring, and switch to a growing orchid tucker when flowering is complete. A slow-release fertilizer in the potting mix, combined with a weekly foliar feed, will keep your plant healthy and thriving.
Temperature and Humidity: Maintain a moderate climate with temperatures ranging between 16–29°C (60–84°F). While the Fish Tail Hoya can tolerate lower temperatures (not below 10°C), it thrives in conditions without extreme heat or humidity.
This is a plant division in a 2.5” pot, about 1 to 2 years to bloom, grown from seed, limited!
As a plant enthusiast, I find that the Hoya polyneura is a true gem in any collection. With its captivating appearance and straightforward care routine, it's a delightful addition to both beginner and experienced plant enthusiasts alike. Bring home the beauty of the Fish Tail Hoya and watch it flourish in your space!
