Oncidium Alliance - Psychopsis krameriana
Oncidium Alliance - Psychopsis krameriana
Native to the tropical regions of Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, and Ecuador, Psychopsis krameriana is a stunning, medium-sized epiphyte that thrives in hot to warm environments. Its natural habitats include lowlands near Chiriquí Lagoon in Panama and the tropical forests of western Colombia and Ecuador, where it grows at altitudes between 200-500 meters.
This beautiful orchid is characterized by its small, laterally compressed pseudobulbs, each subtended by bracts and a single rigid, leathery, elliptic-oblong leaf that measures 15-25 cm in length. Standing at 17-29 cm tall, the plant's sturdy leaves and striking pseudobulbs give it a distinctive appearance even when not in bloom.
When in bloom, Psychopsis krameriana showcases its true glory with successive flowers on a 90 cm long inflorescence. Each flower, measuring between 8.5-12.5 cm, is a captivating display of rich yellow and red-brown hues. The flowers have an intricate structure, with intensely wavy petals and a large, colorful lip that adds to their mesmerizing beauty. Although the flowers last for about a week, the inflorescence continues to produce blooms successively, allowing this orchid to flower for up to a year or longer.
Cultivation Tips:
-
Light: Psychopsis krameriana thrives in medium light levels of 18,000-25,000 lux. Gradually introduce the plant to higher light intensities, ensuring that humidity and air circulation are maintained. Too much direct sunlight can cause leaf burn, so a balance is key.
-
Temperature: Being thermophilic, this orchid prefers warm temperatures. Keep daytime temperatures around 27-28°C (81-82°F) and nighttime temperatures between 19-21°C (66-70°F), with a daily fluctuation of 7-8°C (13-14°F).
-
Humidity: Aim to maintain humidity levels between 80-85% throughout the year. Consistent moisture in the air is crucial for the health of this plant, especially when mounted.
-
Watering: Water frequently during the growing season, ensuring the roots dry quickly after each watering session. Avoid keeping the substrate soggy, as the roots can rot. During cooler months, reduce watering but never allow the plant to completely dry out.
-
Substrate & Repotting: This orchid can be mounted on tree fern or cork with high humidity and daily watering, especially in summer. If potted, choose a medium that retains some moisture but drains quickly, such as a mix of chopped sphagnum moss, perlite, and charcoal. Repotting should be done only when necessary, ideally when new roots are forming, as the plant can take time to re-establish.
-
Fertilizer: Feed Psychopsis krameriana weekly during its active growing season using 1/4 to 1/2 strength orchid fertilizer. Opt for a balanced formula year-round or switch to high-nitrogen fertilizer in spring and summer, followed by a high-phosphorus fertilizer in late summer and autumn to promote flowering.
-
Rest Period: During the winter months, reduce watering slightly, especially when light levels drop and temperatures cool. However, ensure the plant remains hydrated and never allow it to dry out completely.
Add this exotic beauty to your collection, and enjoy the long-lasting blooms of Psychopsis krameriana that will captivate for month.
