Trichoglottis geminata – The Sweetly Scented Paired Orchid
Trichoglottis geminata, affectionately known as the Paired Trichoglottis, is a captivating epiphytic orchid native to the Philippines, particularly the island of Leyte. This distinctive species thrives naturally in scrublands and on volcanic rocks near the sea, flourishing at elevations up to 1100 meters.
A medium-sized, hot to warm growing monopodial orchid, T. geminata features rigid, pendulous to climbing stems adorned with leathery, oblong leaves arranged neatly in two ranks. It produces charming, sweetly fragrant flowers on short, axillary, single-flowered inflorescences held close to the stem. Though typically one flower per stem, the name "geminata" — meaning "paired" — hints at the occasional double bloom, adding a delightful surprise to its flowering habit.
Best of all, this orchid blooms at almost any time of year, bringing its subtle, sweet scent to your collection whenever you least expect it.
Cultivation Tips for Trichoglottis geminata
Light:
Bright, indirect light is ideal. Provide filtered sunlight or dappled shade, avoiding direct midday rays that can scorch the leaves.
Temperature:
Prefers a warm to hot climate, thriving in temperatures ranging from 70–90°F (21–32°C). Protect from cold drafts or temperatures below 60°F (15°C).
Humidity:
High humidity (60–80%) is essential for robust growth. Regular misting and good air circulation will help replicate its native tropical environment.
Watering:
Water regularly, allowing the potting medium or mounted surface to dry slightly between waterings. Overwatering can damage its fine root system, so good drainage is critical.
Potting:
Ideal for mounting on slabs, tree fern, or in baskets with a well-draining medium like coarse bark or sphagnum moss. Its climbing habit is beautifully showcased when allowed to grow pendulously or along a support.
