Introducing the exquisite Camarotis obtuse, a rare monopodial orchid native to the lush landscapes of Bangladesh and found in select regions across northeastern India, Bhutan, Sikkim, Myanmar, and Thailand. This captivating orchid boasts slender fibrous stems that gracefully reach 15-20 cm in length, adorned with linear-oblong leaves of a leathery texture.

During its flowering time in late spring and early summer, the Camarotis obtuse unveils delicate white blossoms, each bearing a striking yellow spot on its lip, adding a touch of elegance to any space. The flowers, measuring approximately 0.65" (1.8 cm), emerge in clusters along a lateral, laxly successively 10 to 15 flowered racemose inflorescence, extending up to 6" (15 cm) in length.

Cultivating the Camarotis obtuse is a rewarding endeavor, especially for enthusiasts seeking to add a touch of rare beauty to their orchid collection. Here are some tips to ensure optimal growth and blooming:

  1. Environment: Mimic the natural habitat of the Camarotis obtuse by providing a warm, humid environment. Ideal temperatures range between 70-85°F (21-29°C), with humidity levels around 60-80%.

  2. Light: Place the orchid in bright, indirect light to promote healthy growth and flowering. Avoid direct sunlight, as it may scorch the delicate leaves.

  3. Watering: Keep the growing medium consistently moist but not soggy. Water the orchid thoroughly when the top inch of the potting mix feels dry, typically every 7-10 days. Ensure proper drainage to prevent waterlogging, which can lead to root rot.

  4. Potting Mix: Use a well-draining orchid mix consisting of materials like bark, sphagnum moss, and perlite. Repot the orchid every 1-2 years to refresh the potting medium and provide adequate space for root growth.

  5. Fertilization: Feed the Camarotis obtuse with a balanced orchid fertilizer diluted to half-strength during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce fertilization frequency during the fall and winter months.

  6. Air Circulation: Promote good air circulation around the orchid to prevent the onset of fungal diseases and ensure the proper exchange of gases.

This is a blooming size mounted or in a 3” pot, about 1 to 2 years to bloom, grown from seed, limited!

With proper care and attention to its natural habitat requirements, the Camarotis obtuse will reward growers with its graceful foliage and enchanting blooms, adding a touch of rare beauty to any orchid collection.
