Introducing the Ansellia africana Orchid - a magnificent species that epitomizes the allure of the African wilderness, boasting captivating yellow blooms adorned with enchanting dark brown spots. Ansellia africana, often dubbed as the Leopard Orchid, stands as a testament to nature's artistic finesse, exuding a delicate herbal and honey-like fragrance that enchants the senses.

Native to the lush landscapes of tropical Africa, particularly the island of Bioko in West Africa, the Ansellia africana has since spread its captivating presence across various regions, from the dense forests of Sudan to the arid landscapes of Namibia. This resilient orchid thrives in diverse habitats, from open wooded areas to humid forests, showcasing its adaptability to a wide range of environmental conditions.

Characterized by its robust stature, the Ansellia africana can reach towering heights of 50-120 cm, boasting cane-like pseudobulbs adorned with elongated leaves. Come late spring and summer, it graces its surroundings with a profusion of fragrant flowers, arranged in laxly 10 to 100 flowered panicles, each bloom measuring 2.5-3.0 cm in diameter.

To cultivate the Ansellia africana Orchid successfully, provide it with medium to high light levels akin to those favored by Cattleyas. Filtered or dispersed sunlight is ideal, shielding the plant from the harsh midday sun. Ensure adequate air circulation to promote healthy growth and blooming.

Maintain a thermophilic environment, with average temperatures ranging from 25-26°C during the day and 18-19°C at night in summer, and 21°C during the day and 9-11°C at night in winter. Introduce cool nights during rest periods to facilitate blooming.

Humidity levels of 70-75% are optimal for most of the year, with a slight reduction to 65% during the winter months. Utilize a well-draining substrate, such as medium-grade fir bark or tree fern fiber mixed with perlite and sphagnum moss, to ensure proper moisture retention and root aeration.

During active growth, water the Ansellia africana regularly, allowing the substrate to dry out between watering sessions to prevent root rot. Fertilize weekly with a quarter to half of the recommended dose of orchid fertilizer, enriching the mix with nitrogen in spring and phosphorus in late summer and autumn.

During the rest period, reduce watering to induce flowering, ensuring the plant dries out between waterings while maintaining occasional misting to prevent excessive dehydration.

This is a near blooming size in a 4" pot, newly repotted, about 1 to 2 years to bloom, grown from seed, limited!

With proper care and attention to its natural habitat, the Ansellia africana Orchid will reward growers with its resplendent blooms and enduring beauty, evoking the untamed spirit of the African wilderness.
