Introducing the Bulbophyllum arfakianum var. alba, a captivating orchid native to the lush rainforests of New Guinea, specifically discovered in the Arfak Mountains of Dutch New Guinea. This unique orchid, with its ascending growth habit and unifoliate structure, thrives at elevations of up to 400 meters on large trees and exposed sites like arable fields and river valleys.
This small-sized, hot-growing epiphyte features pseudobulbs spaced 1" apart on the rhizome. Its leaves, measuring 4.4-6.5 cm in length and 2.5-3.1 cm in width, are thick, leathery, and curved, displaying a beautiful dark green color on the upper side, lighter green underneath, and often adorned with purple edges.
Arfak Mountain Bulbophyllum var. alba blesses its caretaker with fragrant green-yellow flowers during late winter and spring, as well as late summer and fall. The stout inflorescence reaches up to 5 1/2" (14 cm), carrying a solitary flower above the leaves. The intricate flower features fleshy petals, small white hairs, and purple accents, exuding a unique fragrance reminiscent of cheese.
Cultivation Tips:
Light: Provide a light level of 12000-20000 lux, ensuring moderate to strong shading and avoiding direct sunlight. Filtered or diffused light, along with good ventilation, is essential for optimal growth.
Temperature: Maintain an average day temperature of 28-30 ยฐC and a night temperature of 22-23 ยฐC, allowing a daily difference of 6-8 ยฐC throughout the year.
Humidity: Maintain a high humidity level of approximately 85% year-round. Note: Avoid synthetic insecticides and fungicides, as this species is sensitive to them.
Substrate and Repotting: Plant on tree fern rootstock for better growth. Repot when new roots emerge to ensure stability. This orchid thrives on wood rootstocks, especially those large enough to support it for several years.
Watering: During active growth, water generously while ensuring excellent drainage. Let the roots dry out between watering, preventing the substrate from becoming soggy or damp.
Fertilizer: Apply 1/4-1/2 of the recommended dose of orchid fertilizer weekly. Use high-nitrogen fertilizer from spring to mid-summer and shift to high-phosphorus fertilizer until the end of autumn.
Rest Period: In winter, slightly reduce water and fertilizer, particularly if grown in areas with short, dark days. Never let the Bulbophyllum arfakianum completely dry out during this period.
This is a blooming size in a 4" pot, about 1 to 2 years to bloom, grown from seed, limited!
