Bulbophyllum is one of the largest genera in the orchid family, known for its unusual, often fragrant blooms and intriguing growth habits. These orchids are favorites among collectors due to their bizarre beauty and diversity. Native to tropical Asia, Africa, and the Americas, Bulbophyllums thrive in warm, humid environments with excellent air movement.

💡 Light:

Provide bright, indirect light. Filtered morning light or dappled shade is ideal. Avoid direct midday sun, which can scorch leaves. If indoors, place near an east or shaded south-facing window or grow under artificial lights.

Most Bulbophyllum species prefer intermediate to warm temperatures:

• Day: 70–85°F (21–29°C)

• Night: 60–70°F (15–21°C)

💧 Humidity & Water:

High humidity is essential — aim for 60–80%. Bulbophyllums do not like to dry out completely. Keep the medium evenly moist, especially during active growth. Water frequently in hot weather but ensure the roots are not waterlogged.

🌬️ Air Circulation:

Strong airflow is crucial to prevent fungal and bacterial issues. Use fans in enclosed growing spaces or ensure natural air movement around your plants.

🌱 Potting Medium:

These orchids prefer an open, moisture-retentive mix. A blend of fine bark, sphagnum moss, and perlite works well. Some species also thrive mounted on slabs with daily misting in high humidity.

🔁 Repotting:

Repot every 1–2 years, or when the medium breaks down. Choose a pot that allows the rhizome to spread outward, as Bulbophyllums grow laterally.

🌸 Fertilizing:

Use a balanced orchid fertilizer (20-20-20 or similar) diluted to ¼–½ strength, every 2–3 weeks during the growing season. Reduce feeding in winter if growth slows.
