This new stunning orchid hybrid cross Calanthe tankervilleae x Calanthe humblotii; boasts beautiful pink-purple flowers adorned with yellow striations, pink lips, and a yellow throat. Its inflorescence can produce up to 20 flowers, and well-developed plants may even yield a second inflorescence from the same pseudobulb.

Also, known as Calanthe Cooksoniae or Gastrophaius Cooksoniae, which is a cross between Phaius tankervilleae (syn. Calanthe tankervilleae) and Gastrorchis humblotii (syn. Calanthe humblotii).

Cultivating this orchid is a delight, especially since it can thrive on a windowsill. Here's how to care for your Gastrophaius Cooksoniae to ensure it flourishes:

Light:

  • Provide bright, indirect light for optimal growth.
  • Avoid direct sunlight, especially during the hottest parts of the day, to prevent foliage scorch.

Temperature:

  • Maintain daytime temperatures between 65°F to 75°F (18°C to 24°C).
  • Keep the environment slightly cooler at night.
  • Avoid sudden temperature fluctuations to prevent plant stress.

Watering:

  • Keep the growing medium consistently moist but not waterlogged.
  • Water thoroughly when the top inch of the soil feels dry, ensuring proper drainage.

Humidity:

  • Maintain humidity levels between 50% to 70%.
  • Use a humidity tray or a room humidifier in drier environments.

Fertilization:

  • Feed with a balanced orchid fertilizer diluted to half strength during the growing season.
  • Reduce feeding during the dormant period.

Potting Medium:

  • Use a mix that retains some moisture: 40% fir bark, 30% sphagnum moss, and 30% soil.
  • Keep the medium moist during the growing season.
  • Withhold watering for 3 to 4 weeks when growth matures.

Repotting:

  • Repot after flowering, every 2-3 years, or when the medium breaks down.
  • Use a well-draining orchid potting mix and ensure ample space for root growth.

This is a near blooming size in a 4" pot about 2 years to bloom, grown from seed, limited!

With proper care and attention, your Gastrophaius Cooksoniae will reward you with its stunning blooms and graceful presence, adding a touch of elegance to any setting. Enjoy the beauty of nature's masterpiece in your home or garden!
