Cattleya crispa is an exquisite orchid species prized for its showy, fragrant blooms and intricate frilled flowers. Native to the mountainous regions of Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais, Brazil, this orchid can be found growing both epiphytically on tall trees and lithophytically on rocks. Its natural habitat provides it with a warm to cool growing environment, receiving abundant mist and rain during the growing season and cool, drier conditions in the winter.

This small to medium-sized orchid has compressed, grooved pseudobulbs and a single apical leaf that is oblong-lanceolate and notched at the tip. In the summer, Cattleya crispa produces a stunning floral display from a 12-inch (30 cm) long racemose inflorescence, with 4 to 9 large, fragrant, long-lasting flowers. The blooms, measuring 5-6 inches (12.7-15.2 cm) in diameter, are typically white to pale pink with a striking magenta or lavender lip, though varieties with darker purple or pink lips also exist. These frilled flowers last for over three weeks, making them a favorite among collectors.

Cultivation Tips:

  • Light: Provide bright, indirect light, similar to its natural habitat where it grows in open canopies on tall trees. It can tolerate a good amount of sunlight but be careful to avoid direct exposure, as the leaves and pseudobulbs do not typically show purple tinting from sunburn.

  • Temperature: Cattleya crispa thrives in intermediate to cool temperatures. Aim for daytime temperatures of 70-85°F (21-29°C) during the growing season, with cooler night temperatures between 55-60°F (13-16°C). In winter, it can tolerate lower temperatures, even occasional dips near frost (but protect it from freezing).

  • Humidity: Maintain a high humidity level (around 50-80%) year-round, especially during the growing season. This orchid enjoys frequent misting or access to moist air. However, ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal issues.

  • Watering: Water frequently during the active growing season (spring and summer), mimicking the daily mists it experiences in its natural habitat. Keep the medium evenly moist but not soggy. In winter, reduce watering as the plant enters dormancy, allowing the medium to dry out between watering.

  • Fertilizer: Use a balanced orchid fertilizer every two weeks during the growing season, reducing the frequency to once a month in winter. Fertilize after watering to avoid root burn.

  • Repotting: Repot Cattleya crispa every 2-3 years or when the medium begins to break down. It grows well in a well-draining bark-based orchid mix, with good aeration for the roots. Lithophytic plants may benefit from adding some stone or charcoal to the mix.
