Cattleya purpurata var. striata x Myrmecophila christinae, the flowers of this hybrid are magnificent in both size and appearance. Drawing from Cattleya purpurata var. striata, the blooms feature purple veining and a striking deep purple lip. Flower size ranges from 15-25 cm, with 1-7 flowers per stem, depending on the plant’s maturity. Each flower is not only beautiful but also strongly fragrant, carrying the classic Cattleya scent that can perfume any space.

Myrmecophila christinae contributes its towering, multi-flowered spikes that can reach an impressive 40 to 80 inches (100-200 cm) in height. The flowers are wide-spreading, sometimes semi-campanulate in shape, with pale pink or purple hues that complement the deep colors of Cattleya purpurata. The inflorescence may carry 10 to 25 flowers, blooming in clusters to create a truly dramatic display.

Please note: As this is a primary hybrid, the exact bloom outcome is not guaranteed. The flowers from this cross will be a delightful surprise, adding an element of excitement to your orchid collection!

Cultivation Tips:

  1. Light:
Provide bright, indirect light for optimal growth. These orchids thrive in conditions similar to those of their Cattleya and Myrmecophila parents, with light levels around 3000-4000 foot-candles. A location with filtered sunlight, such as a south or east-facing window, is ideal. Outdoor growth in dappled shade is also suitable during warmer months.

  2. Temperature:
This hybrid prefers intermediate to warm conditions, mimicking its natural habitats. Daytime temperatures of 75-85°F (24-29°C) and nighttime temperatures of 60-65°F (16-18°C) are ideal. Myrmecophila christinae contributes a heat tolerance that allows this hybrid to thrive in warmer climates.

  3. Humidity:
Keep humidity levels between 50-70%, especially during the growing season. Use a humidity tray or mist regularly if you are growing the orchid indoors. In high-humidity areas, such as coastal regions, this hybrid will flourish naturally.

  4. Watering:
Water thoroughly when the growing medium becomes dry, usually once a week. Both parent species have pseudobulbs that store water, so they prefer to dry out slightly between waterings. Reduce watering during the cooler months when the plant is not actively growing.

  5. Potting Medium:
Use a well-draining medium like coarse bark or a mixture of bark, charcoal, and perlite. This allows air circulation around the roots, preventing root rot. The hybrid can also be mounted, especially in warmer and more humid environments, where the roots will benefit from ample air exposure.

  6. Fertilizing:
Fertilize every two weeks during the growing season with a balanced orchid fertilizer (20-20-20). During the winter or dormant months, reduce fertilization to once a month.

  7. Air Circulation:
Ensure good air circulation around the plant to prevent fungal or bacterial issues. A gentle fan can help maintain airflow, especially in humid environments.

Blooming:

The flowers of this hybrid appear in late spring to early summer, combining the blooming patterns of both parent species. While Cattleya purpurata is known for its spectacular blooms lasting up to a month, Myrmecophila christinae adds even more flowers on towering spikes, ensuring an extended period of stunning floral display.

This is a blooming size imported bare root orchid division; newly repotted in a 4" or 5" pot; or mounted, about 1 to 2 years to bloom; Grown from seed; Limited!

This hybrid is perfect for growers seeking a striking, fragrant addition to their collection, combining the best traits of Cattleya purpurata var. striata x Myrmecophila christinae. Whether grown indoors or outdoors in the right climate, it will undoubtedly be a showstopper in any orchid collection.
