Introducing the Cattleya reginae: A Brazilian Beauty

Discover the captivating charm of the Cattleya reginae, a remarkable species of orchid native to the enchanting Serra da Caraça mountains in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. This delightful orchid, often referred to as a "miniature wonder," boasts a host of captivating features that make it a cherished addition to any orchid enthusiast's collection.

Description: Cattleya reginae is a diminutive yet tenacious orchid known for its striking beauty. These tough plants produce exquisite flowers that range in size from a dainty 0.6 to 1 inch (1.5 to 2.5 cm). Their compact nature and pretty, delicate flowers make them an ideal choice for enthusiasts of all levels.

Natural Habitat: This species thrives in its native habitat of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil, where it clings to rocky ledges at elevations ranging from 1200 to 2000 meters. Cattleya reginae adopts a miniature to mini-miniature size and is characterized by clustered, conical pseudobulbs. Each pseudobulb carries a single, succulent, boat-shaped leaf that is tinged with a charming purple hue on the underside.

Blooms: In the late spring and summer, Cattleya reginae graces us with its captivating, fragrant flowers, holding them gracefully just above the leaves. The inflorescence is a sight to behold, stretching to 2 inches (5 cm) and carrying between 2 to 6 exquisite blossoms. The Cattleya reginae shares a close relationship with the L. crispata orchid.

Cultivation Tips:

  • Temperature: These orchids thrive in intermediate temperatures, mirroring the conditions of their native Brazilian habitat. Aim for a daytime temperature of around 70-80°F (21-27°C) and a slightly cooler nighttime temperature.

  • Light Level: Cattleya reginae benefits from medium to high light levels. Provide bright, indirect sunlight to encourage optimal growth and flower production. Avoid direct, harsh sunlight that could scorch the leaves.

  • Bloom Season: Look forward to the spring and summer months when your Cattleya reginae graces you with its fragrant, pink and white blooms. These delightful flowers will add a touch of elegance to your orchid collection.
