Coelogyne marmorata – A Fragrant Spring Gem

Elegant, fragrant, and surprisingly easy to grow, Coelogyne marmorata is a true hidden treasure among orchids. Native to the cool, misty forests of the Philippines at elevations above 1000 meters, this medium-sized epiphytic orchid forms compact, attractive clumps of slender, tapering pseudobulbs. Each pseudobulb supports two oblong-lanceolate leaves, creating a lush, graceful plant that quickly becomes a standout in any collection.

In late spring to early summer, Coelogyne marmorata produces slender, arching inflorescences bearing three to six waxy, fragrant flowers. The blooms open almost simultaneously, but staggered flower spikes ensure an extended period of breathtaking display. Each flower features shades of apple-green to pale white, delicately patterned with fine marbling on the inner lobes—an intricate detail that inspired the species name marmorata (meaning "marbled").

Highly perfumed, the blossoms easily fill a room or greenhouse with their sweet fragrance, making this orchid a true sensory delight.

Cultivation Tips for Coelogyne marmorata

Light:
Bright, filtered light is ideal. Provide enough light to encourage blooming but protect from direct midday sun, especially in warmer climates.

Temperature:
Prefers cool to intermediate temperatures, around 55–75°F (13–24°C). It thrives with cooler nights and benefits from a slight temperature drop between day and night.

Humidity:
High humidity (above 60%) is essential. Mimic its natural habitat by ensuring the growing area remains moist and humid, ideally with moss or ferns nearby to signal good moisture levels. Consider using misting systems, wet floors with mulch, or regular hand-spraying if needed.

Watering:
Keep evenly moist during active growth, with slight drying between waterings during cooler months. Consistent moisture is crucial, but avoid waterlogged roots.

Air Circulation:
Strong air movement helps prevent pests like snails, slugs, and scale, which can thrive in humid conditions. Use fans to maintain healthy airflow without sacrificing humidity.

Potting:
Use a well-draining, moisture-retentive mix such as fine bark with added sphagnum moss. Repot once new growth starts, if needed, to refresh the media.

This is a blooming size bareroot division orchid, newly repotted in a 3” or 4” pot, about 1 to 2 years to bloom, grown from seed, limited
