Dendrobium amethystoglossum – Amethyst-Colored Dendrobium
Native to the Philippines, from the province of Benguet

Dendrobium amethystoglossum, also known as the Amethyst-Colored Dendrobium, is a stunning lithophytic species native to the northwest region of Luzon, Philippines. This medium to large-sized orchid thrives in cool to warm conditions and is known for its beautiful, amethyst-tipped flowers that bloom in the winter.

Size & Growth:
This orchid can reach a height of 45–100 cm and produces long, cane-like, ridged stems that grow between 60–90 cm. The stems are often fractiflex (broken or jointed) and carry oval, pale green, leathery leaves that are 8–10 cm long. The leaves are typically deciduous, falling before flowering, though occasionally they will survive for more than one growing season.

Flowering:
Dendrobium amethystoglossum blooms in winter, producing fragrant, long-lasting flowers on a pendant, axillary raceme that can be 15 cm long, with 15–20 flowers. The flowers, 3–3.8 cm in diameter, have white petals that open fully, often with amethyst-colored tips. The tubular lip features a prominent bright purple spot at its center, making the flower appear sharp and striking. These flowers appear on leafless or occasionally leafy canes, adding an elegant touch to your collection.

Light:
This species requires high light intensity, thriving under 30,000–50,000 lux and can tolerate up to 55,000 lux of direct sunlight. A photoperiod of 12 hours of light per day is ideal for optimal growth.

Temperature:
Dendrobium amethystoglossum prefers intermediate temperatures. During the summer, it enjoys daytime temperatures of 22–24°C with nights at 16°C, creating a temperature difference of 6–8°C. In winter, daytime temperatures should remain between 22–24°C, while nights can drop to 13–14°C. The plant can tolerate temperatures as low as 6°C but thrives with a slight temperature variation.

Humidity:
This species thrives in humidity levels of 85–90% throughout the year, making it ideal for humid environments.

Growing Media & Substrate:
For optimal growth, Dendrobium amethystoglossum should be grown on tree fern pieces or planted in pots with a loose, moisture-retaining substrate. Repotting should be done after flowering, typically at the end of the dry season.

Watering:
During the active growth period (late spring to autumn), it is important to maintain consistently moist soil without letting it become soggy. As the plant matures and new growth reaches its peak, watering should be reduced gradually to avoid excess moisture.

Fertilizer:
Fertilize Dendrobium amethystoglossum weekly with 1/4–1/2 of the recommended fertilizer dose. Use a high-nitrogen fertilizer during spring to mid-summer, and switch to a phosphorus-rich fertilizer in late summer and autumn to promote strong blooming.

Rest Period:
This species requires a cool, dry rest period for at least two months, with a maximum of four months. During this time, the plant should be allowed to dry out slightly before being watered again. Ensure it does not remain dry for too long, as this can stress the plant.

This is a blooming size in a 3" or 4" pot, about 1 to 2 years to bloom, grown from seed, limited!

Dendrobium amethystoglossum is an excellent choice for intermediate growers looking for a striking, fragrant orchid with unique, colorful blooms. With proper care, it can thrive and bring beauty to any collection.
