The Dendrobium secundum, often referred to as the "Toothbrush Orchid," is a stunning addition to any orchid collection. This medium to large-sized, semi-pendulous species is native to Southeast Asia, gracing regions such as the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, and several Indonesian islands. With its unique floral arrangement, where all tiny pink flowers align on one side of the stem like the bristles of a toothbrush, this orchid is both distinctive and captivating.

Key Features

  • Growth Habit: This epiphytic species features stout, cane-like pseudobulbs that can reach up to 50-70 cm in length. The stems, divided into multiple internodes, bear alternate, oblong-lanceolate leaves.
  • Flowering: Dendrobium secundum blooms from late summer through late spring. The 12.5 cm long inflorescence arises from the apex of mature pseudobulbs, showcasing up to 50 waxy, glossy flowers that emit a delightful fragrance.
  • Flower Appearance: The flowers, each about 1.6 cm long and 0.6 cm broad, range in color from pale pink to purple, occasionally white, with a distinctive orange labellum. They bloom semi-closed and remain fragrant for 2-3 weeks.
  • Habitat: Found at elevations from sea level to 700 meters, this orchid thrives in semi-deciduous and deciduous dry lowland forests and savanna-like hill woodlands.

Cultivation Tips

  1. Temperature and Humidity: During the vegetative period, maintain high temperatures and humidity. Ensure the plant receives ample light.
  2. Watering: Regular watering is essential, but allow the compost to dry out between waterings if potted. During the growing season, keep the medium moist but not soggy.
  3. Rest Period: From October to March, reduce watering as this is the plant’s rest period. Allow the medium to remain dry, simulating a natural dry season. Cooler temperatures during this time encourage blooming.
  4. Ventilation: Good air circulation is crucial for preventing fungal infections and promoting healthy growth.
  5. Potting Medium: Use a well-draining medium, such as a mix of bark and sphagnum moss, to ensure the roots are aerated.
  6. Feeding: Fertilize regularly during the growing season with a balanced orchid fertilizer, reducing feed during the rest period.
